Monarch Butterfly Showing its Colors

Monarch Butterfly Showing its Colors
  • Contest: SHALLOW DOF
  • Submitted by: Yevette Shapiro
  • DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS : This was taken with a macro lens set at 7.1mm, which is a very shallow depth of field. I tried to just get part of the butterfly in full focus. The butterfly probably just emerged and was not really moving much, so I was able to take several pictures and this was the best one i had..
  • Judge's Critique: Image has a horizontal orientation and the subject’s eye is near the center of the frame. The depth of field seems to be the width of the butterfly’s body and includes two legs and one antenna. The lower part of the butterfly’s wing is close to the edge of the frame. There is an out of focus piece of the leaf crossing one of the legs and close to the face, and a leaf crossing behind the wings. This leaf has a tonality inconsistent with the rest of the image and background. The tip of the stick and fringe edge of the curled leaf the butterfly is on, has a tonality inconsistent with the rest of the image.
