  • DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS : A low key photography studio was set up in a hall in my home. I wanted to be able to close all the doors and cut out all ambient light. A large piece of black material worked for a back drop. We had this decanter in the house. There was a strings of battery powered LED lights inside of the decanter. A small flashlight was use to back light the decanter. The light was white and I really don't know where the blue hue came from. It must have been a prism effect. This was shot using a tripod. The settings were 1 sec, f/4.5, 12mm, ISO-100
  • Judge's Critique: This image meets the challenge for low-key and the yellows and blues in the decanter are complimentary colors. Notice the quantity of specular highlights? These highlights appear as blown out areas from a strobe or other light source. For some photographs, specular highlights can add interest and help emphasize shape, but that is not the case with this image. The blown-out areas are a distraction. Different type and/or use of lighting could have minimized or diminished these highlights. The challenge was achieved, but while this may be an interesting still life image, it does not rise to the level of a competition photograph.
